Young massive star clusters in M 51

چکیده
A search for young massive star clusters (YMCs) in the nearby face-on spiral galaxy M51 (NGC 5194) has been carried out using UBV CCD images from the prime focus camera on the Lick 3 meter Shane telescope. The YMC population is found to be quite rich with a specific U -band luminosity TL(U) ∼ 1.4, consistent with the high current star formation rate of this galaxy. The brightest clusters have MV ∼ −12.5, far brighter than any young clusters currently known in the Milky Way and even surpassing the luminosity of the R136 cluster in the 30 Dor complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud. A few of the YMCs are examined on archive HST/WFPC2 images, confirming their cluster nature and providing estimates of their effective radii of 2− 3 pc. The number of YMCs in M51 is compatible with extrapolation of a power-law luminosity function with exponent ∼ −2 from a Milky Way-like population of open clusters. Both the SFR and TL(U) of M51 are similar to those of other cluster-rich spiral galaxies like NGC 1313 and M83.

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
متن کامل4 Young Massive Star Clusters in Normal Galaxies
Young star clusters with masses similar to those of classical old globular clusters are observed not only in starbursts, mergers or otherwise disturbed galaxies, but also in normal spiral galaxies. Some young clusters with masses as high as ∼ 10 6 M ⊙ have been found in the disks of isolated spirals. Dynamical mass estimates are available for a few of these clusters and are consistent with Krou...

We present a thorough literature study of the most-massive star, mmax, in several young star clusters in order to assess whether or not star clusters are populated from the stellar initial mass function (IMF) by random sampling over the mass range 0.01 6 m 6 150 M⊙ without being constrained by the cluster mass, Mecl. The data reveal a partition of the sample into lowest mass objects (Mecl 6 10 ...
متن کاملFormation of Globular Clusters: In and Out of Dwarf Galaxies
Despite the rapid observational progress in the study of young massive star clusters, the formation of globular clusters still remains poorly understood. Yet, it is emerging that globular cluster formation is intimately linked to the formation of the Galaxy. I discuss a generic scenario of the cluster formation within progenitor galaxies, based on the available observational constraints. The ol...
